The Atlas of Living Australia project and new newsletter

The Atlas of Living Australia project is now making progress and we plan to produce a regular informational newsletter to keep stakeholders and friends aware of what is happening.

 

World Oceans Day - Profiling Student Research

To help celebrate World Ocean’s Day, on the 8th June 2008, MCCN has profiled Australia’s talented marine science students and their research work.

 

New species of dolphin prompts exciting research (Darwin, NT)

On March 6th 2008 a new Australian coastal dolphin research boat was launched in Darwin by WWF-Australia, ING DIRECT and the Northern Territory Government. By conducting boat-based surveys including photo-identification and genetic sampling, much needed information can now be gathered on what is the newest dolphin species to science

Project BLUE - an initiative of the Surfrider Foundation

Project BLUE is an initiative established by the Surfrider Foundation in America and aims to raise more than $1 million in support of ocean and beach protection. Industry brands Billabong, DAKINE, Electric, Nixon, and Reef released limited edition Project BLUE products across America in June 2007, with a percentage of the profits being donated to the Surfrider Foundation. The initiative has now entered Australia with Nixon, Electric and Reef all releasing limited edition Project BLUE products, with $2 from each product sold going directly towards Surfrider Foundation Australia.

 

Seagrass-Watch Kimberley, Broome WA

Seagrass monitoring in the far north west town of Broome, located in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, has inspired a greater understanding of local seagrass and marine ecology. The seagrass occurs in the highly biodiverse intertidal mudflats of Roebuck Bay, which is recognized as a Wetland of International Significance (Ramsar Convention) and is listed as a Threatened Ecological Community.

Project AWARE CoralWatch

Divers interested in coral reef conservation are needed to get involved in Project AWARE’s CoralWatch monitoring program. Free CoralWatch monitoring charts are available from Project AWARE.

CLAM: Coastal Lake Assessment and Management Tool

CLAM is a modelling approach and decision support tool that allows decision-makers and stakeholders to assess the social, economic and environmental trade-offs associated with development, remediation and use options for coastal lakes and estuaries. CLAM was developed by researchers at the Australian National University (ANU) and an accreditation scheme has been formed to train consultants in how to develop and maintain a CLAM.

NAILSMA Turtle and Dugong Project

Traditional Owners from the Kimberley, Top End of the Northern Territory, southern Gulf of Carpentaria, Cape York and the Torres Strait have joined forces to develop community-driven approaches to the sustainable management of marine turtles and dugongs in northern Australia. Coordinated by the North Australian Indigenous Land and Sea Management Alliance (NAILSMA) and the CRC for Tropical Savannas, the Dugong and Marine Turtle project takes a fresh approach by ensuring that Traditional Owners and Indigenous communities are driving research and management activities.

NT Coastal and Marine Atlas

The NT Coastal and Marine Atlas is a web-based database and GIS platform and a hard-copy atlas of existing coastal and inshore marine datasets. Using national (ISO) metadata standards, the Atlas aims to improve accessibility of marine information by collating and standardising existing information. The NT Atlas is integrated with the Australian Coastal Atlas and the NT Spatial Data Directory (NTSDD). The NTSDD site allows for searches for metadata sets from within the mapping environment.

HarbourKeepers Sydney NSW

HarbourKeepers involves the community in regular activities which explore and safeguard Sydney Harbour. HarbourKeepers extends from the seafloor to the water's surface, onto the beaches and surrounding bushland and includes Sydney Harbour's islands.

Coastkeepers NSW CoastKeepers has a number of different events for you to get involved in. Each of which contributes to exploring and safeguarding NSW oceans and foreshores.
